Tourist and Nautical Info

Intro

First of all, I would like to declare that this isn't a professional Web site. And the translation from Greek isn't professional either. So you have to excuse my English.

We chose Lefkas island (Ionian Sea, Greece) as our summer holidays destination for two continues summers (2003 and 2004). We liked Lefkas very much and the basic reason was that it is an ideal destination for speed, motor or sailboat owners. The reason for that is that with difficulty you will find in Greece another place that combines so many advantages for those who prefer to explore their destination via boat. In detail :

• You can reach the island via road (the island is separated from the mainland by a narrow canal) and so you avoid the expensive fares that all ferryboats charge for a car with a boat trailer. Lefkas is 6 - 6:30 hours away from Athens for a car with a boat trailer (1 hour less for a car without a boat trailer)
• The island of Lefkas shapes with the mainland a closed gulf which, in his most points, has very little sea surge, no matter how strong the winds are. By the way, the winds in the Ionian Sea are not as strong as in the Aegean (in the Aegean Sea during the summer blows the famous "meltemi" northern wind).

• Lefkas has very good harbor infrastructures (in the city of Lefkas and in Nidri)
• Has good tourist infrastructures
• Its a popular tourist destination so you never get bored
• Has a lot of vegetation and you can enjoy marvelous sunsets in the Ionian Sea

Why am I writing all this and why am I publishing this pages on the WEB ? Well, when we decided to visit Lefkas for our 2003 summer holidays, I looked desperately for nautical info about the island, info that would help me to optimize our vacations using my motorboat, meaning :

• Find the right beaches
• Spending as less gasoline as possible 
• Spending as less time as possible
• Discomfort my family as less as possible

To make a long story short, imagine yourselves driving your boat for one hour long, spending a lot of gasoline, just to find out that the beach you discovered wasn't worth it. Can you or your family handle one more hour in the sea ? Remember, this is your vacation. And vacations mean swimming in a nice beach, not spending the whole day trying to locate it!

Through this site I want to share my (good and bad) experiences from my two continues summer vacations in Lefkas with everyone who plans to visit it using a speed, motor or sailboat. This way, everyone can optimize his vacations in Lefkas, spending his time as much as "productive" as possible, spending as less time and money as possible.
