Kalamos island

Map 3

Waypoints : P+KALAMOS1 to 2

I located the island for the first time in 2003 when I cruised around Meganisi island. As I looked it from Meganisi, it seemed to me that Kalamos has nothing interesting to show because it's west coast is rocky and deserted. Further information I collected about the island reported that it's east coast was wooded and full of nice beaches.

The information was right. East coast of Kalamos island is magical with pine tree forests reaching it's beaches. We visited the beach P+KALAMOS1, located near the village of Kalamos but with no road access (caution to the reef that you will meet and it's noted on the map). When we reached the beach, we just couldn't believe our eyes. It was huge, deserted, the water was blue and deadly calm like a swimming pool and from the boat we were able to see the sea bed 10 meters down!!! The only problem is that it is exposed to the south winds that blow in the afternoon which created some (very low) waves.

The afternoon of the same day we visited the (smaller) beach P+KALAMOS2.The pine tree forest ends on the beach (!!!), the water is always calm with fantastic blue colors because it stays unaffected from the winds all day long.

I have to note here that on the afternoon, as we were returning to Nidri, the sea on channel dividing Meganisi from Kalamos was really rough, as a result of the afternoon south winds, and we crossed it with great difficulty. On the contrary, in the morning the waters on the channel were deadly calm!

Note also that I have heard interesting information about Kastos island, located near the east coast of Kalamos, but we didn't visit it I and so I can't confirm them.
